Go to a networking event!

It instantly creates personal relationships. You aren't just a name on a card or a business on the internet. You are a real person and the companies who are focusing on building personal relationships are the ones doing more business.

I attended my first one just two weeks ago. A monthly networking group put together by the Silicon Valley Small Business Development Center. There were about 75-100 people who attended and the cost is FREE. Businesses of different sizes and stages were there. Startups, established businesses, small businesses to large businesses. Yes, anyone can attend!

I had my reservations about going since I hadn't attended a networking function before. I had almost talked myself out of it, but decided I had nothing to lose and glad I went.

It was a great experience. The food was great, the people were nice. Everyone is there for the same reason making it really easy to start up a conversation.

They even had a quick 15 minute talk about tips on doing business in tough times. Then separated us up in small groups of 6-8 people where we were given 2 topics to discuss which made it easy to break the ice. We all passed out our business cards to each other and talked about our businesses and challenges and how we are overcoming them. There were some great ideas and it was reassuring to know that everyone was facing the same challenges.

In just 1-1/2 hours I walked away with 3 good contacts. One is placing his first order with me this week!

I am already thinking about what will make your business more memorable at these events. For starters wear a shirt with your logo on it. Seeing, not just hearing your company name will help your prospects remember you. Handing out a useful promotional product will keep your name in front of them and initiates the law of reciprocity. Everyone hands out a business card. Do something different!

There are several networking groups out there. The person behind you strikes up a conversation with you then asks "What do you do?" It's the perfect opportunity to promote your business. What comes out of your mouth is an ordinary, non-exciting response like "I work for a company that sales USB drives". They respond with a dull, "Oh, ok." and because there is nothing extraordinary there the conversation moves on to something else.

You never know where you'll meet a new client and everyone from the receptionist to the owner needs to promote the business. Especially in today's economy.

You need to have a 30 second elevator pitch that entices the listener to want to know more about what you do. If you include the following 3 phrases into your elevator pitch you will have a 90% higher chance of being remembered.

#1-"I work with___________."
#2-"Who have the challenge of ____________."
#3-"Who receives ___________ "(what end result(s).

For example for the person who works for the USB drive company. The elevator pitch can be:

"I work with businesses who have the challenge of keeping their data secure both online and offline. By using our innovative USB drives they receive complete piece of mind that their computers are safe from hacking, viruses, lost passwords and that their files are protected saving them thousands in lost revenue."

The key is to make it into your own words so it rolls off your tongue, creates interest and you are comfortable with it.

Introduce the law of reciprocity along with your pitch and hand them a useful promotional product such as a pen, a game, a business card case (of course with your business card inside), a deck of cards, a game card that they can scratch off and win a prize, discount on their first order, etc. Add a memory hook that relates to your business and the item you are giving and you won't be forgotten.

I was in a class a few weeks ago and sat next to a lady who asked me what I do. I gave her my 30 second pitch and immediately she was drawn in and started asking me questions. The funny part was that after we talked for a few minutes she said, "I met a lady last week who did the same thing you do except you made it sound so fun and interesting." She then gave me her number and asked me to call her because she needed to order some promotional apparel.

Come up with your own today. Memorize it and start using it! You never know who you will meet!

To your success,
Shana Anderson
Complete Workplace, Inc.

T:408.586.9464
F:408.212.9601
E-mail: shana@completeworkplace.com
http://www.completeworkplace.com/

Maximize your trasdeshow ROI! Parts 7-10

We are almost there. The last four sections of Maximizing your tradeshow ROI here. Enjoy reading and implementing these steps.

7. What will you do post-show to follow up and solidify the sale? When will you do it? What forms, cards, letters, etc. can you have done in advance?
The follow up piece should include specific interests or needs that your prospect addressed with you.

Personalization is key to creating greater marketing impact and building the relationship with your new prospect.

If there are prospects/clients that can’t attend the tradeshow hold an open house to demonstrate your new products.

Follow up should be done within 1 week maximum from the date you met the prospect. 3-4 days maximum is preferred and is shown to yield greater results.

What can you do BEFORE the show to help you expedite the post-show follow up? Type up templates, print mailing labels, enough postage readily available, sample kits already packaged, etc.

8. What grading scale will you use to track the sales potential of a lead? How will you segment prospects based on the different types of follow up you need to do?

An example of a grading scale would be to have letter grades assigned for each tier of prospect. For example if the prospect is a decision maker, has the budget and interest in your product or service then they would get an “A”and you would follow up with them more intensely. If it is determined that the prospect may have a need for your product in the future, but is not a decision maker then they would get a low grade. The grading scale should be printed and your staff should have a clear understanding of it BEFORE the show.

Have a form that can be filled in with a column to staple/write in their contact name, phone/e-mail, activity to do, date needed by and lead grade.

9.Who will you use for your trade show staff? What type of characteristics do you want them to have? What image do you want them to portray? What are your expectations of them?
An often overlooked component is your staff. Train them to promote your company before, during and after the show. Keeping your message simple will help put you ahead of your competition. Remember that the attendees are bombarded with information and the more complex your sales pitch, products, etc. are the less likely they will remember you.
At the show remember the attendees are tired, impatient and feeling that they need to hurry on in order to see all the booths before the show closes. Quickly and effectively ask questions that get to the root of their needs so you can give them your solutions in a quick and timely matter. When you follow up after the show is when you can get into more details if you need to.
Does your staff understand the importance of catering to the ego of your prospects? Engaging them in conversations to discover their needs and making them feel special? It’s your job to make sure they do.

Bring your best salespeople. Teach them to qualify prospects quickly and don't waste your time or best giveaways with "tire kickers". Spend quality time with existing and qualified leads and give them your best giveaways so you stay top of mind and they will call you first when they need you.

Go over your expectations with your staff and get them on board. Make sure you have enough staff so breaks can be taken. Always have an introductory speech ready and make sure your staff gives a warm, inviting "Hi!" whenever someone walks by and looks your way. Most importantly, don't forget to always ask for the sale and ALWAYS....Have Fun!

Last, but not least have a well thought out uniform for your staff. Something that will stand out AND fits your corporate image. The basic blue or white shirts will not get you recognized. If there is a nice teal color in your logo use that color for your shirts and always have your shirt embroidered with your company info. Take advantage of the area right above the cuff on your long sleeve shirt. It’s a nice subtle place to embroider your website, tagline, etc. When you are pointing to an item, your prospect will notice the embroidery and remember it.

10. How will you track your results? If you don’t track your results then how will you know if it was worth the investment.

Have a Tracking Mechanism: Establish a tracking mechanism to measure the success of your trade show giveaways. If it is a redemption item, code it so that you know it resulted from the show. Post-show follow-up could include a question about the premium - did visitors remember receiving it and how useful was the item.

After the trade show, critique your giveaways with your exhibit team:
Did it draw specific prospects to the booth?
Was it eye-catching enough to persuade passers by to stop?
Did your customers find it useful?
Did it project the right corporate image?

The heart of your success is to attract targeted prospects to your booth, engage them with your products and services and solidify the sale.Without well thought out, targeted planning you will be throwing money away. Come up with a plan, stay focused and execute it and you will see the payoff!

Make the most of your tradeshow by applying the 10 ways to increase your tradeshow ROI. Do it right and you’ll increase your sales higher than you ever thought possible.

If you have a tradeshow or other event coming up and need help selecting a product that represents your company, a giveaway and/or a prize please contact us. If so, you have a good base to build on. This week we tackle pre-show marketing and driving traffic to your booth. Get your pen and paper out get started on steps 5 & 6.

5. What will you do for pre-show marketing to your prospects and clients? Pre-show promotions are the best way to get traffic to your booth.
E-mail blasts, website advertising, mailings, coupons and personal visits/phone calls inviting your prospects to your booth are all great ways to drive more traffic to your booth and are essential in maximizing your ROI.
An effective pre-show mailing should entice the prospect to make it a priority to come to your booth. Some effective ideas are to send part of a gift and tell them when they visit your booth they will receive the other part.
Your pre-show promotion should fit your company and it's objectives and be carried throughout the entire tradeshow marketing campaign.
Most tradeshows have a list of exhibitors on their website. Ask to have their website linked to yours. Your linked webpage should list your booth #, contact info., marketing message, list of activities and times (if applicable).

Separate literature should be used before, during and after the show.
If you choose a brochure spotlight new items and selling points that appeal to your prospects needs and entice them to come to your booth.
Include coupons in your pre-show marketing. The coupon is good only for taking the desired you specify at the show. For example rebates on items purchased at the show, free activation, etc.
Send out a tickler invitation with details of the promotion or a coupon a couple days before the show.
The heart of your success is to attract targeted prospects to your booth. Pre-show marketing is where the excitement begins. Spend the time and money necessary to make your trade show a success.

6. What will you do to drive traffic to your booth? Pre-show? At the show? Giveaways that will put you above your competition.

Contests at your booth are always a hit. They generate traffic and excitement to your booth.
Include information about the contests in all pre-show literature.
A 2 part contest has been proven to increase results significantly.
Drawings, prize wheels, cash cube, jeopardy style game, hoops or a putting green are all contests that drive traffic to your booth.

If you choose to do a putting contest then putt with a stress ball instead of regular golf ball. This puts contestants on the same playing field and more fun.

In order to enter the contest the attendee must drop a business card, sign a guest book or fill in a ticket (and give their contact info.). This info. is later used to do follow up marketing.
While waiting for their turn to play your staff should talk to the prospects. Ask them what they do. If they've ever purchased your type of product/service before.

If they win they receive the prize. If they are qualified leads they are taken through the sales pitch, asked for their contact information, given literature, samples, etc. If they aren't qualified leads they are given a promotional gift, literature to pass on to the decision maker at their company and they went on their way.
The buzz created by contests attracts people to your booth. Remember....Traffic Draws Traffic! Prizes should compliment your business and appeal to anyone.

Offer gift certificates for your products/services as prizes and to increase sales and your client base.
Idea…use playing cards in your pre-show marketing. When they redeem the playing card at the booth they receive a gift (appropriate to who they are). Send out several different tier levels. Aces to your current clients, Kings for a for your hot prospects, Queens for your other prospects and Jacks for companies you want to build a relationship with. When they bring the card to the booth they are easily identified.

Thoroughly think through the contest beforehand.
Pick a theme that ties in with your company’s tradeshow marketing.
Pick the prizes. Tie them into your company’s products/services.
Follow the Trade Show Rules and Regulations.
Have at least 1 staff member dedicated solely to the contest.
Market! Market! Market! the contest.
On pre-show marketing
Your website
Personal invitations via e-mail, phone, person or mail.
Near the venue.
At the hotel, convention center, etc.
On signs outside of the show
In the bathroom.
On T-shirts that your staff is wearing and have them walk the show floor.
If you are giving away a bag advertise the contest on the bag.
Make sure your company name, contact info. and booth number are dominant.
Creating enough buzz to get people to visit your booth is only part of the picture. Once they show up what are you going to do? The right giveaways make your business memorable, build your brand and start conversations. These tradeshow giveaways will put you above your competition:
Bags: Prospects always need a bag to carry the items they pick up at the show. You can come to the rescue. Include a message on the bag that advertises your business, your top products, contests, etc. Don’t forget to put your booth number and contact info. Coordinate your bags with your staff shirts, tradeshow booth or company logo. A color that stands out and gets attention (yet attractive) is what you are going for.

T-shirts/hats: A nice graphic with your logo booth # and contact info. that they want to wear. Again use a color that coordinates with you and stands out. Attach a prize to it and they will wear it. Tell them that you have undercover staff walking the showroom floor and if they are caught wearing the item that they will receive $100 cash. Watch how fast they put the item on. The shirt must be appealing to them in order for them to continue to wear it after the show. Graphics and imprint method are key.

Water bottles: Your prospects are tired and thirsty from hours of walking the show floor. Have cold water at your booth for them. Part 7-steps 3 & 4

Last week we covered steps 1 & 2 and gave you solutions from accomplishing your tradeshow goals to what to include in your booth to make it stand out from your competition.

This week we give you answers and solutions to steps 3 & 4. Creating your budget and prospecting list.

Step #3. What's your budget? The more advanced thinking you do in this area, the more money you can save yourself.
Your booth:
*Where do you want your booth located?
Corner booth at the front of the hall and near a high traffic area (entrance, major intersections, food area, etc.) is ideal.
Stay away from dead end aisles, the last aisle, stages or anywhere presentations are going on during the show, loading docks, receiving doors, obstacles such as water pipes, fire equipment, columns, etc.
*Use lighter materials in your booth construction to save money.
*How much lighting do you really need?
*How much electricity do you need?
*Will a literature rack help keep your collateral organized and easy for your prospects to obtain.
*What components do you need to include in your booth to effectively promote your products/services?
*Do you need a table? Meeting area? Chairs?

Marketing:
*What will you do for pre-show marketing?
*How many tiers of giveaways will you need?
*How many colors do you need to imprint on your promotional products?
*The less colors imprinted the less expensive the item.
*What quantities will you need?
*Remember it's less expensive to order 1,000 pieces than to place 2 orders of 500 pieces.
*What contests will you have?
*How much can you spend on prizes?
*What will you do for post-show follow up?

Staff:
*How many staff members will you need?
*What will they wear?

Step#4. Who are your targeted prospects? What is their demographic? How will you compile your list?
*They should be qualified recipients who are decision makers or who influence the decision maker.
*Start with the pre-registered attendee list. Not everyone will be your prospects. Narrow it down and create a list of targeted prospects.
*Are any of your existing clients going to attend?
*Invite clients that you believe will benefit from the show and use this opportunity to enhance your relationship with them.
*Keep the demographics of this list in mind when creating your booth, your contests, giveaways, marketing campaigns, etc.
*Get in their heads.
*How do they think, feel, make decisions and what are their hurts?
*Offer them deals that are simple, quick and easy.

With the ideas and solutions in these steps you are on your way to creating the required groundwork necessary to maximize your tradeshow ROI.

Next week we will tackle steps 3 & 4. Part 7-steps 1 & 2

Last week we listed the items that you need to think about in order to maximize your trade show ROI. This week we are giving you ideas and solutions for Steps 1 & 2.

1. What's your goal for the tradeshow? Is it to sell products? Increase your client base? Network with other vendors to establish relationships with them that attract referrals? To see what your competition is doing? To position yourself as an expert in your field?
Have a live presentation going in your booth that that will draw people in. A person presenting will be more effective than a looping video. Presentations should be geared towards what problem your product/service solves for them.

*If you sell a product show it, have the prospect touch it. If there are various levels of quality/features then explain the differences and how they solve the client’s problems. Simplify it as much as possible to keep their attention and not overwhelm them. As you present include/invite other trade show attendees that are watching/walking by into your discussion. Always spend a few minutes doing Q&A. if you notice the same questions being asked over and over include the answers in your presentation.

*Offer specials only available when orders are placed at the show.

*Before the show get an exhibitor list. Mark any exhibitors that you want to build relationships with. Are there any that you can partner with to market to their client base?

*From the same exhibitor list mark any competitors. Visit their booths. Notice their displays. How they attract traffic. How they make their presentations. What is their image for their staff and booth?

*Speak at the event as an expert in your field and include a promotion to your attendees to receive a free gift when they come to your booth.

*Even if you aren’t speaking at the education sessions provide some of the items that they will need such as pen, notepad, highlighters, travel coffee mugs, etc. A USB drive with the speaker’s presentation on it and your company brochure will always be a hit.

*Walk into the aisle and ask if anyone is looking for _____ (this is a general question that relates to the problem that your product/services solve). For example....if you sell solar panels for homes ask “Is anyone looking for information on how to save $____ on their electrical bill every year?”

*Create buzz around your booth to draw others in.

***What can you do or say better than your competitors to show your prospects that you are an expert in your field and the company to do business with. If you offer the same products as your competitors then you need to show them your company has better service, more targeted solutions and higher expertise to save them time and money.

2. What image do you want to project? What do you need in your exhibit to get attention and display your products? What will make you stand out? What size booth do you need? Where do you want your booth to be located?

*To maximize your passer by traffic it’s important to not only have a clean, professional display, but for your booth to feel warm and inviting and make your attendees feel comfortable.

*Blues, whites and greens are professional colors, but can blend in easily. Bold, eye catching colors such as yellows, reds and oranges grab attention, but be careful with them. They are strong colors and can put off some attendees.

*Keep in mind the flow of traffic in and out of your booth. Allowing ample area for prospects to enter your booth will increase the warm, inviting feel of it. Have a table set up with chairs so you can meet with yoru clients.

*Literature racks will keep your marketing collateral organized and easily accessible for the attendees.

*Use lighting to spotlight your company name or your products. Draw attention to the areas you would like.

*Using nature sounds or other relaxing music in your booth can draw people to it.

*The smell and sound of a popcorn machine will attract a crowd to your booth. While you are creating a bag engage them in conversation.

*The graphics you use should induce an immediate emotional response to attendees walking by your booth. Remember you have 3 seconds to get their attention. Use a nice graphic with 3-4 words about it. The font should be easy to read in size, type and color.

*What interaction between the client and your product can you create at your booth? If you can put your product in the hands of your prospect you have a better chance of closing the deal.

*If you recently launched an innovative new product your image, graphics and booth should reflect it.

*The younger generation wants a more hands on, personal experience than generations before. Personalize your approach and you will win with this generation. Introduce yourself, ask their name and use it. Focus on them and really listen. Engage them in conversation by using appropriate levels of eye contact. Taking this step builds rapport and trust that you care for them and have their best interest in mind.

*Don't forget your staff. The image they portray is a direct reflection of your company and its products/services. They need to be outgoing and memorable.

*Add a special color balloon(s) to the top of your trade show exhibit to attract attention and to help attendees find you.

*Free water for all attendees will also drive traffic to your booth. The time it takes to get the water is a perfect time to start a conversation and the law of reciprocity will kick in and they will be more than happy to talk to you.

*Set up a video monitor that shows your products/services in action to attract attention and boost sales. If you don't have video of your products/services in action then create a PowerPoint presentation that can be displayed on a laptop.

*Make sure your logo is prominent.

*A banner stand with eye catching graphics and clean upscale look will draw attention to your booth.

*If you use a table you need a table cloth that compliments your display and has your logo on it to help attendees remember you.

*Arrange your display table in tiers. Larger items at the rear, mid sized in the middle and short items in front.

*Use a presentation board that shows your products/services in action and measurable data on how it's helped your clients improve sales, productivity, etc. Your company name, logo and contact information should be obvious.

*Have a portfolio showing before and after pictures. Make sure the portfolio is easily accessible to your attendees so they can flip through at their leisure.

With the ideas and solutions in the first 2 steps you will create the base for your getting the most out of your trade shows. Next week we will tackle steps 3 & 4. In the meantime if you have any questions or need solutions for your events please feel free to contact me.

Promotions that get results!

Shana Anderson

Complete Workplace, Inc.

Milpitas, Ca

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://completeworkplace.blogspot.com/2009/03/build-your-business-in-slow-economy_16.html' title='Build Your Business In A Slow Economy! Part 6

Create an effective, targeted marketing campaign!

Many companies make the mistake of calling a "promotional give-away" a "promotional marketing campaign". There is a huge difference. A give-away consists of putting your logo on an item and giving it to your prospects. That's it. A marketing campaign has a detailed process behind it and is designed to produce targeted results that you can track.

Before you select the item that you will be using in your campaign you need to ask yourself the following questions.

1. What do you want to accomplish with this campaign?
2. Who is your target audience?
3. What promotional product will attract my target audience, compliment the product/service you are offering and will entice my prospects to act?
4. What is your call to action?
5. How will you get the promotional product to your target audience?
6. Create a road map with the steps and dates necessary to pull off your campaign.
7. How will you track your results?

By taking the time to really think this through before you pick a promotional product and start you will create an efficient and targeted marketing campaign. Part 5

Part 5 focuses on boosting employee morale quickly & KEEP IT UP!

How's your morale? Are you getting the most out of yourself and your co-workers? Implement these quick and affordable tips today and watch morale increase instantly!

Morale Boosting Tips:
1. Celebrate! Reward! Recognize! Everyone wants to be appreciated. Catch your employees doing something right. Did they go the extra mile? Did they handle a difficult situation well? Did they make one of your customers feel special? As soon as it happens recognize it, celebrate it and reward it. Don't wait, acknowledge it in front of co-workers and it will be infectious. If you reward the act with an item that can be displayed everyone will get on board and it will become a competition. Everyone will want to "be caught" doing something right so they get the most awards. Go a step further and at the end of 6 months tally the number of awards that each person received and the employee with the most awards receives a grand prize.

2. Positive Motivation! Nothing is more contagious than the energy of a happy and upbeat person. Stay positive and those around you will become positive too. Motivate your employees to give their best. They are apart of your company and they do affect everyone's attitude around them. Your employees and customers want to work with energetic and positive people. Have a contest. Every month the office nominates a person to receive the "Happy Award" that they proudly display on their desk. On the last day of the month have an office lunch and present the award.

3. Honest Communication! Employees are worried about their jobs, their bills, their families. If they come to work everyday wondering "Will I be laid off today?" you won't get the most out of them. They are too stressed and distracted to give your company and your clients 110%. Tell your employees the truth and you will gain their respect and ease their minds. I believe everyone will agree that the unknown is the hardest to deal with. Don't let their minds make up situations that they will need to deal with. Lay the real picture out for them and get them on board with your vision and how you will continue to be successful during this new economy.

4. Exciting Workplace! Can you give your top performers a larger workplace? Can you expand their cubicles? Can you swap out their boring furniture for something nicer? If you've done layoffs you can probably say "YES!" to atleast one of these questions. You may already have the furniture at your office. Or you can save money and purchase used furniture. It will show your employees that you appreciate them and will get them excited to come to work.

5. Empower and Reward! Now is not the time to micro-manage your employees. It justs brings morale down. Instead tell them that you respect them and know they have the skills and critical thinking necessary to do the job. When they achieve the result you want, REWARD IT! Give them a gift certificate, paid time off, a cash bonus, etc. It doesn't have to be a large monetary value, just something that, that person will appreciate and use.

You lead by example. If you are passionate about your job, your employees will be too. If you are optimistic about your company's future so will your employees. Take the time to take care of your employees and they will take care of you. Try it and it will work.

Promotions that get results!
Shana Anderson
Complete Workplace, Inc.
Milpitas, Ca

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://completeworkplace.blogspot.com/2009/02/build-your-business-in-slow-economy_23.html' title='Build your business in a slow economy! Part 4

This one is important whether you are in a good economy or bad, but it's vital during the bad. Guard and cater to your current customers! Everyone is looking to increase their client base for several reasons. Clients are cutting back their spending, going out of business, or they are price shopping and going with whomever will give them the best deal. Now is the time to make sure you are guarding your clients and catering to their needs!

Here are the top 5 ways to insure that you don't lose their business:

1. Find ways to constantly touch them without marketing to them. Send them a card on the holidays and their birthdays. Send them a "I've been thinking of you" e-mail, or an interesting article that relates to them or their business. Make it personal and show you truly care about them.

2. Talk to your clients. If you have a good relationship with them you will be able to ask them what you can do to help them. What you can do better and what you excel at. Then brainstorm and implement the ideas. Follow up the talk with a thank you card expressing your attitude for their honesty and openness.

3. Profit margins are going down and your clients are shopping around. What better way to entice them into spending some money.....implement a "24 hour customer appreciation" sale! Make sure the item(s) you put on sale are good quality and items that they want.

4. Always be available. If your clients normally call your office phone from 9am-5pm. Send your clients a personal note with your cell phone number and tell them that you want to be available when they need you so feel free to call at night or on the weekends. This will help build the relationship and loyalty with your clients.

5. Keep marketing to them. If you stop your marketing efforts you will be forgotten. Mix it up. An e-mail followed by a direct mail piece followed by a fax then a phone call. Keep it interesting. Do things that noone else is doing.

Keep things personal. It's your personal relationship with them that will keep them coming back to you and will prevent your competition from stealing your clients. Make your clients feel special because they are. Do things that noone else is doing. Your clients will notice and thank you for it.

If you would like help putting a promotion together to "touch" your clients contact me and I would love to help.

Promotions that get results!
Shana Anderson
Complete Workplace, Inc.
Milpitas, Ca

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://completeworkplace.blogspot.com/2009/02/build-your-business-in-slow-economy_16.html' title='Build your business in a slow economy! Part 3

Have you started implementing the first 2 parts? How much of a difference has it made in your business? If you implement a little you will improve a little. If you implement a lot then you will get a lot.

This week's tip is to network and partner up. Join a networking group, chamber of commerce or volunteer in an organization that you will meet people who will need your services or partner up with another company that already sales to your potential clients.

It's very true that if you give without expecting anything in return you will receive back ten fold of what you gave. I do a lot of volunteer work and have found that with the relationships that I have built over the years, I have made some great contacts and made a lot of friends. It's a win-win all of the way around.

Have you thought of putting together your own networking group? What about a networking lunch? Would any of your clients or friends be able to work with each other? I bet they would. Just think of the "feel-good" feeling you will get knowing that you have helped your clients and friends out. Trust me. Do this unselfishly and it will come back ten fold.

Who can you partner with that already sales to your type of potential clients? Can you swap client lists? Will they endorse you? Do you feel comfortable endorsing them?

Check out this website for lots of information on networking groups. http://www.bni.com

Always remember to wear your company logo whenever you are going to be in a situation where your potential clients will be around. A creative tagline can entice people to ask questions about your business making it an easy marketing opportunity for you.

Promotions that get results!
Shana Anderson
Complete Workplace, Inc.
Milpitas, Ca

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://completeworkplace.blogspot.com/2009/02/build-your-business-in-slow-economy_07.html' title='Build your business in a slow economy! Part 2

Now that you've had a week to start implementing the customer service ideas from Part 1 it's time to start on Part 2....focus on your bottom line. Start by reviewing all of your overhead. Is there any place you can cut back? Do you need all of your phone lines? Can the heater be turned down a few degrees? Are you optimizing your time and gas each day by grouping appointments and tasks outside of your office? Do you need that monthly subscription? Look in every nook and cranny to make sure you cutback every place you can.

Cash flow is king with the new economy. Review your Accounts Receivables. Get aggressive. The squeaky wheel gets the grease. Companies are trying to keep their cash as long as they can which can mean 45, 60 even 90 days. Send statements, make phone calls and get aggressive with your collections. It may be time to change your policies so you aren't strapped for cash nor stuck when a company goes under.

Socking away funds in good times and bad are always important. Put it in your budget and stick to it. You'd be surprised at how fast a little money put in savings will add up by the end of the year. Commit to leaving it in savings.

Spend your advertising budget wisely. Businesses are closing daily and their customers are looking for another company to work with. If you sit quietly in the background, then quietly sitting in the background you will stay. You need to prospect and keep "touching" your existing clients so they know you are there when they need you. Instead of throwing money away on untargeted advertising make your money work smarter for you.

The results of a recent study showing the average cost per impression for each advertising vehicle is as follows:

* The average promotional products item is $0.004
* Advertisement in a National Magazine is $0.033
*In a Sports Radio is $0.005
*In a Newspaper ad (1/2 page BW) is $1.019

Review the results and ask yourself which of these marketing vehicles effectively targets the exact clients you want to "touch"? The only answer is promotional products. It's the only vehicle that delivers your messge to the exact person, in the exact company at the exact time you want to reach them.

Don't stop advertising in this new economy. Instead start advertising effectively so you get the most out of your advertising dollar.

If you have any questions or need help with your advertising feel free to contact me. Promotional products advertising is not just my job. It's my passion!

Promotions that get results!
Shana Anderson
Complete Workplace, Inc.
Milpitas, Ca

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://completeworkplace.blogspot.com/2009/02/build-your-business-in-slow-economy.html' title='Build your business in a slow economy! Part 1

Don't get down about the economy. Instead hold your head high and work smarter on your business. Businesses can thrive during an economic slow-down. Companies around you are going out of business. Now is the time to make your company stand out. Where should you start?

The first place is customer service. Make your customer's experience happy, easy and memorable. Make them smile. Show them that they are important to you no matter how much or how little they spend with you.

When you pick up the phone give them your full attention and greet them as if they were standing in front of you.

Go the extra mile. Give them updates during your processes. Your communication is key. If you deliver products. Let them know you received their order and when you anticipate it to ship. Once it ships send them the tracking number/estimated delivery date. If there are any problems with the order tell them upfront so there are no surprises.

After the item is received contact them to make sure everything was received and that they are happy with it.

Do the same type of service if you are selling an intangible item. Let them know you received their order and when the work will be done. Contact them the day before to remind them. After the service is performed contact them to insure they are satisfied.

If for any reason they aren't satisfied fix it immediately. The last thing you want to do is have it sit in front of them for them to dwell on.

If you are truly committed to GREAT customer service your business will grow. Ask your clients to fill out surveys about your company. See where you need to improve. Reward your employees for what they are doing well. Everyone wants to be recognized for what they do. A few kind words, a thank you gift, etc. go a long way in keeping employee morale up.

Ask your customers for referrals. If you are doing your part then they will reward you with referrals. The majority of my business is from referrals. My clients know that whomever they refer to me will be well taken care of. I treat my clients the way I want to be treated and I suggest you do the same.

Stay tuned for more tips to help you grow your business!

Promotions that get results!
Shana Anderson
Complete Workplace, Inc.
Milpitas, Ca

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://completeworkplace.blogspot.com/2009/01/build-your-business-in-slow-economy.html' title='Build your business in a slow economy! If not, you are throwing your marketing dollars away and will be a victim in this economy. People want functional, eco-friendly, comfortable and trendy. So what does that consist of for 2009?

1. V-necks for men and women are hot! Comfort and appeal is the key to this style. For a more upscale look put an oxford dress shirt with it. The V-neck style can be worn day or night from the gym to the board room.

2. Performance wear...you can't go wrong! Whether for the gym, the golf course or the tradeshow floor you'll always be in style and comfortable in performance wear. Wrinkle resistant, stain resistant and moisture wicking fabrics just to name a few help you perform and look great doing it.

3. Sustainable apparel will keep our planet healthy for generations to come! Organic fabrics, recycled and reused materials and environmentally responsible manufacturing is a win-win for everyone. They feel great too.

4. Tailored shirts & jackets. Ladies want to look like ladies in their clothing and prefer a coordinating women's style to the men's instead of unisex, one cut fits both sexes approach.

5. Plaid, plaid and more plaid! Whether it's just a hint of plaid or a full garment, plaid is a hit in 2009. A touch of classy and subdued plaid will be worn amongst the trendiest consumers. Great for accessories too.

6. New printing techniques are abundant. With screen printing new techniques are being created to give a leather look. Glitter that doesn't rub off is popular with the ladies. Foil transfers have been around, but they are pricey a solution has been created called foil ink. Great look without the high price! A new technique called discharge ink is coming out now. Like the sublimation technique you really can't feel the imprint This technique is a water based ink that takes the dye out of the garment. Laser etching on denim and micro fiber actually burns the image into the apparel. You need to see this in person. It's very HOT! Definitely giving your clients something to talk about.

7. Where to imprint? As always left chest is the most popular especially in the corporate world. High end/upscale apparel keeps it's classy appeal by embroidering tone on tone. Ladies prefer a subtle left sleeve imprint over the left chest. To appeal to the younger markets all over prints, shoulder to chest prints and large front prints are very HOT! Instead of just putting your logo on the left chest add visual appeal by adding graphics around it.

8. The 2009 color pallet for men is neutral tones such as black, khaki, blue and of course olive. Ladies should expect to see more colors with greens, subdued oranges, plums, darker yellows and brighter blues. The colors shown are the 2009 pallet. As summer approaches expect the shades shown to get brighter. Once fall appears they will darken.

To be successful this year you must be creative and focus on what your clients want. What will give you the most impressions, what imprint will entice your consumer to wear your advertising? A logo alone doesn't do it anymore. Graphics are hot and consumers want retail appeal. Give it to them. It doesn't cost anything additional, but your ROI will be greatly improved.

Promotions that get results!
Shana Anderson
Complete Workplace, Inc.
Milpitas, Ca

Looking forward to 2009!

I'm excited because I just got back from Florida where I attended the promotional products tradeshow. Over 800 vendors, tons of classes and Tony Robbins (my all time favorite life coach) was a key speaker. The energy he brings and the way he shows you to look at situations and make positive changes is OUTSTANDING!

I'm such a positive person anyways, but this just hyped my energy more! it's easy to let the media bring our spirits down and see all of the doom and gloom out there. Instead all of us need to take advantage of the market. Promote ourselves and take this time to show our clients that we truly care about them and their well-being.

Your industry, my industry, your client's industry.... they all have competition. Everyone is looking to save a dollar. Everyone wants to work with someone they trust and respect that has the service and knowledge to help their business. I challenge you to be that person to your clients. I'm not a salesperson. Don't want to be and never will be. I am a friend to my client, a solutions provider. Sometimes even a counselor when their lives are tough.

How many times have my clients (I consider them friends also) spilled their guts to me about a personal situation? More than you'd think! They always say...sorry to bother you, I know you don't want to hear about my personal problems. My response....of course I do. I am always here for you whether it's business, life's accomplishments or disappointments. I can always make time to listen.

With the busy lives we lead we forget to take the time to help others. I challenge you to set a goal for yourself to make the time starting today to be there for others.

2009 is going to be a great year! A year where we dig down and figure out who we are and what's important to us. I know what's important to me....helping people.

Wishing you success in all you do,
Shana Anderson
Complete Workplace, Inc.

Success secrets for 2009!

With the downturn of the economy many businesses feel it's time to tighten their belts and focus on surviving instead of what keeps them in business. Businesses are closing every day. With these 4 easy steps you can ensure a successful new year.

#1-Plan your work and work your plan. Take time to plot out your marketing plan for the entire year. Include tradeshows, e-mail blasts, direct mail, etc. How often do you want to "touch" your clients? Can you work time in monthly to personally "touch" each of them? If not focus on your top 20%. Acknowledge their birthdays, send articles that pertain to their business. After each order and every referral send them a thank you card/gift. Ask yourself, what can you do to keep a personal relationship with your clients so they stay loyal to you. Are you using social networks for your clients to keep in touch with you? Make your list reasonable. Doing too much can give you paralysis.

#2-Make a list of 5-7 things that you will NOT do this year. These are items that aren't productive or work against your goals. Such as cleaning your office during normal business hours. Wasting time and energy on projects that produce small or no results. This list is as important as #1 above.

#3-Follow-up! It's important to keep your client abreast of the status of their order. If it is supposed to ship on Monday. Contact them on Monday afternoon and let them know it did with the expected arrival date and tracking number. Within 1-2 days of it's arrival contact your client and confirm that it was received and that they are happy with it. If they aren't do what it takes to fix the problem. Ensuring their satisfaction keeps them as your client! Fall in love with your clients and they will fall in love with you.

#4-Motivate your TEAM! Make sure your employees are on the same team. Getting them to buy into your vision is the only way your company can survive. Your employees are the only people who are more important than your customers. Take time to recognize the employees who make a difference to your company. Reward them. Clear, concise, targeted marketing and spend your resources wisely.

In today's world you must build relationships. It's not good enough to mass market and hope someone steps forward. You must plan your work and work your plan.

Step #1. Who is your target audience? Define them. Who are they, what are their interests, how can you get their attention? Narrow down your target audience by location, industry, company size, etc. The best way to do this is to analyze your top existing clients and find out what they have in common. Then go after them.

Step #2. What is their biggest problem and how can you solve it? To figure this out you must think like them. What keeps them up at night? What problem do they have that wastes their time and money? Don't know? Ask them face-to-face or in a survey. What motivates them to make a buying decision? Remember, prospects never care about you or your company they only care about what you can do for them. When they see that you can provide solutions to their problems they will seek you out!

Step #3. What can you give away that has real value to your prospect? It doesn't have to be expensive. It is the perceived value that matters. In fact make sure it is low cost to implement, but has a high perceived value. The give away must be relevant to the prospect and must address their pain. What not to give away: a sales pitch, Free/discontinued products and services with lots of fine print and restrictions, etc. This will work against you. Remember at this stage they don't know who you are and if they get a bad taste in their mouth, they will turn and run, never looking back. The goal is to let the prospect get a taste of what you can do for them without giving it all away. When you genuinely care about your prospects well-being this comes through in everything you do and the relationship will start to be built. Focus on your prospects lifetime value not on the quick sale.

4. Stay in contact! Every month that you don't contact your clients you lose 10% of your influence. There are so many ways to stay in contact. A newsletter, e-mail, newpaper/magazine clipping saying "I say this and thought you might enjoy this article", cards (B-day, Thank you, etc.). The point is that it only takes a minute to do these and it means alot to your new client.

In summary, always give prospects more than they expect (service, value, time, energy, content, etc.). It will cost you a lot less than traditional advertising and will increase your profits dramatically.

If you would like some ideas that would help you get your foot in the door with your prospects please contact me. I would love to help you.

Wishing you success in your business,

Shana Anderson

Complete Workplace, Inc.

http://www.completeworkplace.com/

Stand out above the competition!

With so much competition how can your company stand out? Get up close and personal with them!

How do I do that? If you have a mascot, brand it. Use it in all of your advertising. Make it come to life. Have a costume made and take it to the streets. This is a great way to get your name out there. People love to take pictures with mascots. Don't stop there! Have a present ready for them so your company stays "top of mind". Give a T-shirt away and they advertise and endorse your company for you. Walking billboards for your brand!

Don't have a mascot. Put together a "street team". Put together a small group of "brand enthusiasts" to dispurse throughout an event or area. With a consistent look throughout, wearing the brand message and giving away your logoed merchandise, free products, etc. your event will be a success and will save you hundreds even thousands of dollars over radio, print and TV advertising. Great for lead generation as well!

The goal of the "street team" is to place your brand into the hands of the targeted consumer and build an immediate and intimate relationship. Outgoing personalities, fun giveaways, free items, etc. bring the consumer to them.

Consumers like street teams because they can touch and feel the product in a safe environment without the pressure to buy. They also put a face on your brand. Give the appearance of being a large company even if you are working out of your home office.

Before you send your street team out, spend a little time educating them on your company, the products and what you expect to accomplish.

Think through what you would like to hand out. Most business owners don't understand that there is a difference between a give away and a promotion. Which one do you want to do? A give away can not be tracked. It is handed to the consumer and you have no way of knowing if they ever used it. A promotion requests an action needs to be done in order to get to the next step. For example, hand out a key with a keychain that says "Bring this key to ________(company name) on ______(date & time). For your chance to win a new car. "

By really showing your target market that you understand them you ensure a deeper emotional connection.

Promotional ideas for your street team:

*At a tradeshow? Give away an item with your booth number. When they arrive they play a game which puts them in the drawing to win a grand prize.

*Drive consumers to your website. Give away a game piece that drives people to your site for a chance to win.

*Split your targeted consumers up into groups and go where they are. Example....Consumers: athletes, Moms, Partiers, etc. Location: parks, malls, night clubs, etc. Gifts: watches, beauty supplies, glow sticks.

*At Christmas time get into the holidays by dressing your street team in Santa gear. Give away items that are gift wrapped. Everyone likes gifts, especially when you have to unwrap it to see what's inside. Encourage everyone to celebrate the holiday's.

Street team checklist:

#1-Hire attractive, outgoing people that represent your brand & target clients. First impressions do matter.

#2-Create demand. If the consumers believe there is enough to go around then they won't jump on it. If they think they need to jump on it quickly to get their share they will jump!

#3-Don't be cheap! Spend a few extra dollars and get the results you want. Make the promotion memorable, useful or interactive. Surprise them. Delight them with your gift. If you go cheap the item will probably end up in the trash.

#4-Include a call to action. Drive foot traffic to the retail store or online for redemption. Request and incent your target clients to take action. Then keep track of the effectiveness of your offer.

Street teams are gaining in popularity. They save money, build your brand, generate leads and increase market share. What are you waiting for?

Need help with your street team promotion or any others? Probably the best value per view of any promotional item out there. It is viewed daily, even several times a day. It's used in front of others and they too notice your logo. It can start a conversation, referring business to you that would have surely been missed otherwise.

On average a calendar is looked at 12 times per day. That's 84 times per week. Over a year that's 4,380 times. That many views will keep your brand top of mind.

in 2006 approx. $500 million dollars were spent on calendars branded with company logos. In 2007 $660 million dollars were spent. That's an increase of more than 30%. Were you smart with your advertising dollars and purchased calendars or did you miss the boat?

We all want to be organized and with so many options out there what's the best way to do it? Calendars! Many believed the days of the paper calendar were numbered with the rise of the PDA's and BlackBerrys. NOT TRUE! Calendar sales continue to flourish year after year.

With only 3-1/2 months left in the year and the holiday season just around the corner what are you going to give to your clients this holiday season? Don't wait until the last minute and give your gift with everyone else. Make an impression and be the first to give your holiday gift. Showing that you are ahead of the crowd, proactive and that you are always there for your clients.

What are the best selling calendars? Wall hanging, appointment style calendars with a different picture each month. Which theme should you select? Timeless...something that everyone likes. Scenic, motivational, Americana, Norman Rockwell, etc.

What if I want to be trendier? Eco-friendly is the way to go. Printed on recycled paper. Printed with Eco images and tips.

What about the construction industries? Employees who spend the day in the field prefer day planners.

Need to motivate your employees? Do your clients want to motivate theirs?
